ABOUT / HOW THIS SITE WORKS

Retirement income, one source at a time

Novin Pak explains Canadian retirement income the way it actually arrives: as separate payments from separate sources, each with its own rules, its own dates and its own tax.

Why one source at a time

Most retirees in Canada live on several incomes at once: the Canada Pension Plan, perhaps a workplace pension, registered savings in an RRSP or RRIF, and Old Age Security. They are often discussed together, which is where confusion starts. A rule that applies to one rarely applies to the others. So we file each topic under the source it belongs to, in four dossiers:

  • Dossier A, Canada Pension Plan: When the public pension starts, how it is indexed each January, what can still be changed and what tax does to it.
  • Dossier B, Workplace pensions: Defined benefit and defined contribution plans, commuted values, locked-in accounts and the survivor option.
  • Dossier C, RRSPs and RRIFs: Turning registered savings into income: withdrawals, RRIFs, spousal plans and annuities.
  • Dossier D, Taxes on retirement income: What comes off each source before it reaches the bank: withholding, instalments, credits and the OAS recovery tax.

How files are written

Every article is a numbered file. Each one is written by Novin Pak Editorial from official public sources: the Government of Canada and Service Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency, the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, provincial pension regulators such as FSRA in Ontario, and the published text of the law. The sources are listed at the end of every file, with links, so that any reader can check them.

Where a file needs numbers to explain a rule, they appear in a table we call the working. Official figures are labelled with their source. Everything else is a clearly marked illustration with round, hypothetical amounts. None of it is a forecast of anyone’s payment.
